Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes#

Tamim Ansary (2009)
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

This book came highly recommended, and despite my initial concern about its scope, it turned out to be exactly what I needed. I was already immersed in readings about Palestine and Iran, but I lacked the broader historical context to truly understand how the Islamic and Arab worlds developed over time.

Destiny Disrupted fills that gap beautifully. It is clear, accessible, and incredibly engaging even for readers who were never formally taught this history — a category that includes most Americans. Ansary connects centuries of events into a coherent narrative that makes the region’s political, cultural, and religious evolution far easier to understand.

I walked away with a significantly deeper appreciation of the Islamic world. It’s a fantastic starting point for anyone trying to expand their understanding beyond the Western historical lens.
